A 41-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after admitting to a series of abusive acts.

Kevin McDaid of Eaton Park, pleaded guilty at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday (7th July), to multiple offences, including intentional strangulation, controlling and coercive behaviour, and several assaults leading to actual bodily harm.

McDaid's abusive behaviour spanned several months last year, during which he subjected his victim to physical and verbal attacks.

In one terrifying incident, he dragged the victim across the floor by her hair before threatening her with a kitchen knife.

Following this attack, the victim required surgery and was given morphine for pain relief.

On two more occasions, McDaid strangled the victim by placing his hands around her throat until she choked.

PC Matthew Bennett, the officer in charge of the case, praised the victim's bravery and highlighted the commitment of law enforcement to support and protect victims.

"The victim in this case has shown incredible courage in helping us to bring him justice," PC Bennett said.

"McDaid subjected her to violent and spontaneous attacks, whilst also leaving her in fear of violence through his coercive and controlling behaviour."

PC Bennett noted that McDaid's methods of control included monitoring the victim's phone and social media, dictating her communication, and threatening her family.

"I hope this sentencing shows that we are committed to protecting victims and are here to support you if you're ready to talk to us," he added.
