A man has been sentenced to two years and two months in jail for stealing items and assaulting a woman in Stoke-on-Trent.

Neil Archie Chris McGilligan, 37, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, received his sentence at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday 5th March after pleading guilty to charges including burglary and theft, wounding, and criminal damage.

The crime occurred on 24th August last year when the victim returned home and discovered her laptop, phone charger, and trainers were missing.

She then encountered McGilligan peering through her downstairs kitchen window.

McGilligan proceeded to throw an item at the woman, causing her serious injuries, and then smashed another window by hurling a cat bowl before fleeing the scene.

Following an investigation, McGilligan was arrested.

Although he initially answered ‘no comment’ during questioning, he later admitted the offences in court.

PC Katie Ratcliffe from the Stoke-on-Trent North local policing team said, "McGilligan showed no regard for the victim, her home or her belongings."

She added, "I am glad McGilligan received a custodial sentence for his offending, and hope this shows our commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence across Staffordshire."
