Rise in very low food hygiene ratings in Newcastle
Officials concerned about increase in low-rated businesses
Newcastle-under-Lyme food hygiene ratings have revealed a surge in venues needing significant improvements, with figures published by the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in April.
Out of 894 assessed businesses, 774 received a 'very good' rating, while those requiring major improvements increased to 18, and three received the lowest rating of zero.
The public protection committee raised concerns over these numbers, with Councillor David Hutchison questioning why low ratings have risen.
Environmental health manager Gareth Harvey assured that these establishments are subject to enhanced inspections and enforcement action, aiming to ensure public safety.
Mr Harvey noted that pandemic-related delays in inspections might have contributed to declining standards. He stressed that low-rated venues would receive prompt inspections, with several already given hygiene improvement notices.
Inspections are planned for 345 businesses in 2026/27, and businesses can opt for early re-inspections to boost their ratings.
