21-mile pipeline planned to link up two reservoirs and waterworks
It's to keep water supplies healthy and topped up in Staffordshire
A 21-mile water pipeline could be built from Staffordshire to Derbyshire to link two areas of open water.
Severn Trent wants to build a new water main between Carsington and Tittesworth reservoirs.
The company says the 34-kilometre pipeline would let water flow from the River Derwent and Carsington Reservoir over to the Tittesworth water treatment works.
It says this would keep supplies steady even during dry spells.
Severn Trent has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Opinion Request to the relevant council authorities.
It describes this as the first formal step in the consenting process for the Carsington to Tittesworth Water Transfer Scheme.
Public engagement is expected to begin in early 2027, according to the company.
It says construction is not anticipated before late spring 2027 at the earliest.
The project overview lists the dates as autumn 2025 to spring 2030.
On its website, Severn Trent said: 'It will let water flow from the River Derwent and Carsington Reservoir over to the Tittesworth water treatment works, keeping supplies steady even during dry spells.'
It also said: 'By doing this, we'll help Tittesworth Reservoir hold on to precious water longer, making sure local communities have enough.'
The company says it is continuing to develop its plans, looking at how it can minimise impacts and support the communities and businesses around Carsington and along the proposed pipeline route.
It says the project is part of a wider effort to safeguard natural water sources and prevent further environmental degradation.
It also says it is part of its commitment to future-proofing the water network so it can meet the challenges of climate change and population growth.
