A large fire has swept through the historic Grade II listed Big Mill in Leek, Staffordshire, prompting evacuations and a vigorous emergency response.

The alarm was raised at 9.22pm on Friday, 27th March, when smoke and flames were spotted emerging from the building on Mill Street. Formerly a silk factory, the mill was empty but plans were underway to convert it into residential homes.

Coordinated response

At the fire's peak, up to six crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by Staffordshire Police, worked diligently to contain the blaze. While the fire is under control, it has not yet been fully extinguished and the structure remains too unsafe for crews to enter. A large cordon surrounds the area, with four fire crews currently managing the situation.

Residents are advised to maintain closed windows and doors due to excessive smoke. Station Manager Jonathan Ashby said: “The fire is under control but has yet to be extinguished as crews are unable to enter the building at this time.”

Police investigation and arrest

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man from Leek on suspicion of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered. He remains in custody while investigations continue.

Authorities have enacted various road closures within the cordoned area and supported evacuated residents. The cause of the fire will be determined by an upcoming investigation.

Anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage related to the incident is encouraged to contact police on 101, referencing incident number 733 of 27th March. Anonymous reports can be made via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Cooperation from the community in avoiding the site is appreciated to allow responders to efficiently manage the aftermath of the incident.
