People wearing orange badges hope to save lives in Staffordshire
People are being urged to train and become mental health allies
Staffordshire has introduced a new community initiative called the Orange Button scheme, aimed at tackling suicide rates in the area.
Residents can now access free online training provided by Staffordshire County Council to become mental health allies.
Those who complete the training will earn an orange badge, signaling they're ready to listen and guide people towards mental health support when needed.
On average, nine suicides occur each month across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
This scheme hopes to reduce that number by equipping everyday community members with the knowledge and confidence to engage in helpful conversations with those struggling.
Martin Rogerson from Staffordshire County Council emphasised the importance of the program by saying:
"The Orange Button scheme is designed to give people the confidence to start conversations and guide individuals towards available support."
"By creating a visible network of trained locals, we aim to make it easier for residents to access help and ensure they don't have to face tough times alone."
