Major works to alter a North Staffordshire road labelled as one of the most dangerous in the country have started this week.

The Draycott Cross Road, on the edge of Cheadle, had 13 collisions in just six weeks last year.

Now Staffordshire County Council is changing the give way intersection to a stop junction.

Additionally, advance warning signs to alert drivers to the junction ahead are being installed.

The roadworks have been split into two phases, with more safety measures to come in 2026.

Speed limits on Brookhouse Road and Draycott Cross Road will be cut to 30mph, while the existing 30mph limit on Delphouse Road will be extended further west.

The local authority says it has decided to begin the first phase now, rather than waiting until next year to start improving road safety.

Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways North, said the work done on the road junction will ‘massively’ help to prevent future accidents.

He added: “We’ve done a lot of planning to get to this stage.

"The speed restriction has to go through a traffic regulation order, which has to go out to public consultation, which can take some time to get sorted.

“We have to rely on road users themselves - they need to pay more attention and be more cautious when they come to a junction like this.”
