NHS Staffordshire urges new uni students to get the meningitis jab

University students planning to start this autumn are being urged to book their free NHS MenB vaccination now to ensure they are protected before the term begins.

MenB disease, which can lead to meningitis or septicaemia, is a severe bacterial infection with serious health risks.

Those under 25 starting university this autumn qualify for the free vaccination, part of a special programme introduced this summer, which has led to a significant reduction in MenB cases among vaccinated groups.

To achieve full protection, students need two doses, administered 28 days apart, with the final dose at least two weeks before university starts.

Steps to get the jab

Booking the vaccination is straightforward. If born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008, appointments can be made via the NHS National Booking Service. Those who fall outside this age bracket can visit participating community pharmacies. These pharmacies offer flexible appointment times to suit student schedules, with details available on the NHS website.

• Starting university for the first time this autumn
• Require two doses of the MenB vaccine

With many freshers' weeks approaching, NHS leaders in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are encouraging students to book their vaccinations promptly.

MenB bacteria spread through close contact and shared living arrangements, so students are advised to ensure they are up-to-date with all vaccinations via their GP or the NHS App.
