Firefighters have put out a large fire, at a derelict building in Stoke-on-Trent.

Crews were called at 5.15am today (Friday 29 May) to High Street, Tunstall, after reports of smoke coming from a building.

Six appliances including the aerial ladder platform (ALP) attended the scene, alongside colleagues from Staffordshire Police.

The fire was extinguished using the ALP, four main jets and two hose reel jets.

Four kittens were also rescued from the building.

Crews remain at the scene dampening down hotspots and an investigation into the cause of the fire will take place in due course.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "Our team has been on site following the major fire on High Street, Tunstall. After assessing the damage, High Street and Roundwell Street will remain closed until further notice.

"Contractors now need to safely demolish parts of the structure to make the building secure. For your safety, please stay away from the area and follow all road closures and diversion signs.

"Thank you for your patience while this essential work takes place."
