A man who physically and emotionally abused his partner has been jailed following a court appearance.

Owen Meredith, 27, of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced to two years and one month in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday 23rd January 2026. He admitted to two counts of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, three counts of intentional strangulation, and one count of stalking involving serious alarm or distress.

Meredith's abusive actions were uncovered in November 2022 when the victim came forward to report the ongoing abuse.

His behaviour included repeated occasions of intentional strangulation and physical attacks, such as punching.

Police arrested Meredith and questioned him in custody. After being released, he attempted to access the victim's social media accounts, sent her personalised cards, and emailed her.

After securing the necessary evidence, Meredith was charged and taken to court. He has now been sentenced to prison and handed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

Sergeant Georgia Hughes, from Newcastle-under-Lyme local policing team, said: “Meredith’s actions were both physically and emotionally damaging to the victim, who has shown immense courage in coming forward and trying to seek help.

“We are determined to support victims of domestic abuse and to bring perpetrators to justice for their incredibly damaging crimes.”
