Etruscan Square regeneration set to begin with Hanley demolition
The former Iceland store is the first step in the brownfield project
Demolition work is set to commence next week on the former Iceland store in Hanley, signalling the start of the multi-million-pound Etruscan Square regeneration project.
The building located on Charles Street will be torn down starting Monday, 24th August. The process, which includes site preparation and levelling, is expected to take approximately six weeks.
Temporary footpath and partial road closures on Charles Street will be in place during the demolition. Local businesses and residents have been notified, and measures will be taken to minimise disruption and ensure safety.
The council is collaborating with partners PfP Igloo and Genr8 to deliver phase one of the Etruscan Square development, focusing on affordable housing.
The demolition is necessary to progress the initial phase centred around the Iceland store and Charles Street Car Park area.
Clearing the site will address concerns over security, anti-social behaviour, and vandalism related to the vacant building, as well as reduce maintenance costs for the council.
Etruscan Square, supported by £20 million of Government Levelling Up funding, aims to revitalise Hanley into a thriving place for living, working, shopping, and leisure.
Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, overseeing growth, regeneration and transport, said: “The start of demolition work at the former Iceland store marks another important milestone in bringing the long-awaited Etruscan Square brownfield regeneration project forward. These works will not only ensure we have no potential issues associated with an empty building but also prepare the ground for the first phase of development.
“Etruscan Square is one of the most significant regeneration opportunities in Stoke-on-Trent, and it will help transform Hanley by delivering much-needed new homes, including affordable housing, while helping create a more attractive and vibrant city centre.
"We appreciate that there will be some temporary disruption during the demolition works, and we would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience as we take this important step towards delivering the future vision for the site.”
