Woman tried to smuggle drugs inside 'chocolate bar' into HMP Stoke Heath

A woman has been jailed after trying to smuggle drugs, disguised as a chocolate bar, into a Shropshire prison while visiting her son.
Claire Evans, 40, of Wycliffe Grove, Walsall, was visiting at HMP Stoke Heath near Market Drayton on 15 May when she placed the 'chocolate bar' on a tray at the refreshments counter.
Police say she then handed the tray to her son, who put it in his pocket.
A prison officer saw what happened and immediately seized the item.
When staff opened the wrapper, they found cocaine, cannabis, cannabis resin and buprenorphine tablets inside.
Police say the drugs would have been worth an estimated £2,800 inside the prison.
Evans was arrested at the scene and later admitted four counts of conveying prohibited items into a prison.
She was jailed for 16 months at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday (30 July).
Detective Constable Heyes said: "The smuggling of drugs into our prisons will not be tolerated. These substances fuel violence, debt and exploitation behind bars, putting both prisoners and staff at risk.
“This sentence should serve as a warning that anyone caught attempting to bring drugs or other prohibited items into prison can expect to be prosecuted and face a custodial sentence."
