Cheshire football fans urged to celebrate World Cup 2026 responsibly
Police increase patrols to ensure safe enjoyment of tournament
As the World Cup 2026 kicks off on 11th June, football fans across Cheshire are reminded to enjoy the tournament safely and responsibly.
Cheshire Police encourages supporters gathering in homes, pubs, and venues to celebrate in a positive and respectful manner.
With matches scheduled across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, many games will occur later in the evening, boosting night-time activity.
Cheshire Police plans to work closely with licensed premises and partners to assure safe enjoyment during the tournament's busy periods.
While most fans celebrate without issue, heightened emotions paired with alcohol can increase the risk of disorder.
Supporters are urged to look out for one another, avoid confrontation, and walk away from situations that might escalate.
Additional policing resources will be deployed across key locations on match days, with officers providing reassurance and addressing any anti-social or criminal behaviour.
Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley, overseeing Cheshire Police’s World Cup operation, stated,
"The World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for people to come together and enjoy the atmosphere... We will have increased patrols in place across key town centres and busy locations during match periods."
Cheshire's emergency services also caution residents on the risks associated with drink and drug driving. Even minor alcohol or drug usage can impair a driver’s reactions, concentration, and vision, increasing collision risks.
Those over the legal limit or under drug influence face consequences, including a driving ban, fines, and a criminal record.
Chief Superintendent Wrigley advises,
"If you are heading out to watch the football where alcohol may be involved, plan ahead. Book a taxi, arrange a designated driver, or stay over."
Anyone witnessing anti-social or suspicious behaviour is encouraged to report it to an officer, or contact Cheshire Police on 101.
