Cheshire East Council disappointed by government decision on A500 scheme funding
Plans for key transport improvements in Crewe halted
Cheshire East Council is deeply disappointed following the announcement that its plans to improve the A500 corridor will not receive Government funding under the Major Road Network programme.
The Department for Transport has decided to remove the scheme, which aimed to improve connections to Crewe Railway Station, from the funding list, impacting potential enhancements for safe and sustainable travel.
The council had developed a more affordable alternative after HS2's northern leg cancellation in 2023 led to the original plan's loss.
Councillor Mark Goldsmith stated the decision represents another lost chance to boost Crewe’s growth potential.
“The A500 is a vital gateway into the town. Improvements could have supported employment, housing, and enhanced transport connections," Cllr Goldsmith said.
The council must now assess the financial implications of the withdrawal and explore if parts of the scheme can still proceed.
Despite the setback, Cllr Goldsmith affirmed the ongoing commitment to Crewe’s growth and prosperity through partnership and exploring future investment opportunities.
