High Speed Training has released a new report detailing care home ratings across the North West, placing Cheshire West and Chester as the local authority with the highest percentage of inadequate care homes.

Analysis of Care Quality Commission (CQC) data was conducted on over 13,500 care homes across England, and 80.05% of those in the North West were rated good or outstanding. Despite North West's 7th place ranking nationally, Cheshire West and Chester recorded 5.48% of its care homes with an inadequate status, raising concerns about quality and safety in the area.

Wigan emerged as the region's top performer, with 92.45% of its care homes receiving good or outstanding ratings. In contrast, the Wirral had the lowest performance, with only 66.02% of care homes rated positively.

The report highlighted Trafford as the local authority with the highest percentage of outstanding care homes at 13.73%, while Manchester outperformed Liverpool with a combined good or outstanding rate of 81.08% compared to Liverpool's 66.67%.

Dr Richard Anderson, Director of Learning at High Speed Training, emphasised the importance of these ratings, stating, “The ratings provided by the CQC are a really important part of the care home landscape, as they give the public an accessible way to assess the quality of care available to them."

The report sheds light on the overall resilience in the care home sector in the North West, but also underscores the need for continued improvement—particularly in management and leadership, highlighted by the fact that ‘Well-led’ remains the most challenging pillar for the industry to master according to the CQC's assessments.

For further details on these findings, the full report is available on High Speed Training's website.
