Cannock Chase wildfire brought under control
Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene over the weekend and into Monday (10 August)
A major wildfire at Cannock Chase has been brought under control, with more crews beginning to leave the scene.
Emergency services were called to the area at around 2.30pm on Wednesday 5 August.
At its height, 15 crews were working to surround the fire and contain it.
People in the area were urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene over the weekend and into Monday 10 August.
They’re dampening down hotspots and working to prevent the fire from reigniting, which remains a risk because of the dry, warm weather.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service says an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin when it's safe to do so.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jim Bywater said: “Our fire crews have worked tremendously hard over the last few days to bring this fire under control as quickly as possible and prevent further spread.
“While I’d like to recognise their efforts, I’d also like to extend a thank you to our local partners who have all pulled together to help contain this fire, which could’ve easily spread beyond control and caused significant damage to the local area.
“We continue to receive support from the NFU, Severn Trent Water, Cannock Chase District Council, Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.
“I’d also like to say a thank you to the countless comments and positive messages we’ve received online from the local community.”
