Damage caused by disposable barbecues on Cannock Chase viewing platform condemned
Staffordshire County Council stresses dangers to wildlife and environment
Staffordshire County Council has condemned the use of disposable barbecues and the littering of a newly-installed viewing platform at Brindley Heath in Cannock Chase.
Over the weekend, rangers discovered that at least three barbecues had been lit directly on the platform, causing significant burn damage.
The site was littered with a large amount of waste, including numerous glass bottles, a gazebo, and other debris, which staff and volunteers worked hard to clear.
Funded by Sports England, the viewing platform aims to improve access and encourage responsible enjoyment of Brindley Heath's landscape.
The damage has raised concerns over visitor behaviour, increasing the risk of wildfires, which pose threats to public safety and are harmful to the environment.
Lighting fires or using disposable barbecues is prohibited on the site due to the risk they pose, particularly in warm and dry conditions.
Even small fires can quickly spread, endangering wildlife, habitats, and people.
Sarah Bentley, Head of Environment and Countryside at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“It’s incredibly disappointing to see a brand new facility damaged in such a thoughtless way, especially when so much work has gone into improving the experience for visitors.
“There is absolutely no excuse for using disposable barbecues and leaving litter behind at our country parks. It is dangerous, irresponsible and shows a complete lack of respect for the countryside and the people who work hard to care for it. Cannock Chase supports internationally significant wildlife habitats which are particularly vulnerable to wildfires and we all need to do our bit to protect the area.
“I’d like to thank our volunteers who gave up their time to clear the mess. We’re asking everyone to respect these special places by taking litter home, following the rules and helping us protect Cannock Chase for the future.”
The council is reminding visitors to avoid lighting fires or using disposable barbecues, take all litter home or dispose of it in bins, follow signage, stick to established paths, keep dogs on leads, and pick up their waste.
