A man from Burton-on-Trent who assaulted, strangled and threatened to kill a woman has been jailed for more than seven years.

48 year-old Marlon Johnson, of Burton-on-Trent, has been sentenced to seven-years-and-two-months behind bars at Stafford Crown Court on Monday 20 October after he admitted four counts of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, two counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of assault by beating and one count of threats to kill.

Between 2021 and 2023, Johnson launched a campaign of abuse on the woman. He punched her, dragged her by her hair, bit her and hit her with objects.

Officers launched an investigation and started gathering all of the available evidence needed to bring him in for questioning and secure the charges.

Because of the strength of this evidence and the bravery of the victim, Johnson admitted the offences during a trial earlier this year.

As part of his sentencing, he was also served with an indefinite restraining order, preventing him from making any contact with the victim.

Sergeant Felicity Bownds, from the east Staffordshire local policing team, said: “I’d like to commend the victim in this case in reporting the abuse she suffered and for supporting our investigation, which has ultimately led to a dangerous offender being locked up for a number of years.

“I hope this outcome gives her some form of closure and also shows other victims of violence, abuse and intimidation against women and girls that we are here for you and we are determined to keep acting robustly against those responsible for harm in our communities.”
