Bank staff in Cheshire are joining forces with police to combat romance fraud, a type of scam where victims are persuaded to send money or take out loans for individuals they meet online.

Over the past year, Cheshire Police received 218 reports of romance fraud, marking a 17% increase compared to the previous year.

In these cases, 160 victims suffered financial losses, with fraudsters frequently manipulating individuals via dating apps and social media.

Since August, bank staff in Cheshire collaborated with local police to protect individuals considering transferring money to acquaintances met online.

The partnership involved identifying potential victims who were contemplating substantial financial transfers or loans based on virtual relationships and making them aware of the risks.

PC Jim Day, Financial Abuse Safeguarding and Prevention Officer, highlighted the emotional toll of such fraud, noting victims not only lose money but also trust in relationships.

Day urged vigilance if online contacts start discussing financial difficulties and encouraged victims to report incidents immediately.

Cheshire Police advises against sending money to anyone only met online, and to be cautious of those who avoid video calls or meeting in person.

Anyone suspecting a friend or family member may be a victim is encouraged to raise awareness and provide support.
