Stoke-on-Trent trials 20mph speed limit in Penkhull
Scheme aims to improve road safety and air quality
Last updated 11th Feb 2026
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has introduced an experimental 20 miles per hour speed limit in part of Penkhull.
Concerns regarding vehicle speeds and road safety in Penkhull prompted this decision, aimed at creating a safer environment for locals, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The trial will apply to several roads under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) and is initially set for six months.
The council plans to monitor the impact of reduced speeds on road safety and air quality during this period.
Feedback from the community, including residents, businesses, and road users, will be collected and considered before making the scheme permanent.
A spokesperson for the council confirmed that written comments on the experimental order can be submitted until 9th August 2026.
Councillor Amjid Wazir OBE stated: "This trial puts local people’s concerns at the heart of our work to make neighbourhoods safer. By trialling the scheme, we can assess whether lower speeds help to reduce risk, improve air quality and create a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone. We will monitor the results carefully and listen to residents before any decision on extending the trial or making the scheme permanent."
