'One of the club's modern greats': Barry Bannan departs Sheffield Wednesday for Millwall
He's penned an 18 month contract with the Lions - after spending over a decade at Hillsborough
Long-serving Sheffield Wednesday midfielder and captain Barry Bannan has completed his move to Championship rivals Millwall.
The 36-year-old, who has signed an 18-month contract at The Den, spent a decade at Hillsborough, during which he made over 450 appearances for the Owls.
In a statement confirming the departure, Owls confirmed Millwall made the approach for Bannan, with the 36 year old deciding it was an offer he couldn't afford to turn down.
The talismanic leader first joined Owls on a free transfer in the summer of 2015, becoming captain during the 2020-21 season.
He was part of the team that secured Wednesday's return to Championship football and since Owls fell into administration last year has been a role model for the young squad.
"Given the club’s current position in Administration, the Administrators are unable to give the assurances that Barry was understandably seeking" the club wrote.
"Equally, the preferred bidder was unable to make any binding commitments to Barry until the regulatory process, which remains ongoing, is completed and ownership formally changes.
Barry leaves Sheffield Wednesday as one of the club’s modern greats, an inspirational leader on both sides of the white line."
"Through promotion pushes, relegation battles and periods of extreme difficulty, his commitment, professionalism and passion for Sheffield Wednesday have never wavered."
