People urged to 'make the most' of warm spaces in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire
It's as temperatures continue to drop below freezing this week
People in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire are being encouraged to 'make the most' of warm spaces - as the 'cold snap' continues this week.
It's following concerns around the cost of heating bills for some - after government cuts to the winter fuel payment in 2024.
Safiya Saeed helps run a 'warm space' in the Burngreave area of Sheffield - She says anybody is welcome to use their facilities:
"Elderly people, new arrivals, asylum seekers, people who need help filling out certain forms, or those with housing or health problems can all come down.
"Don't isolate yourself - even if you have a child at home, or a brother, or somebody with vulnerability or a mental health issue or disability - come to your nearest warm space.
"You can always try and different warm space if your nearest one doesn't suit you.
"Free hot drinks are available where we are at the Verdon Street Recreation Centre - you can also get soup, cookies, quiche and salad.
"It's a welcoming space that's made for whoever needs it.
"Even if you're young and just need a quiet place to do your homework; our aim is to accommodate anybody who needs it."
