Sheffield Wednesday Football Club have signed defender Jordi Liongola, subject to international clearance.

Joining from Belgian Pro League side RAAL La Louvière for an undisclosed fee, the Burundi international has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Hillsborough.

Liongola arrives after playing an integral role during an historic period for RAAL, who earned back-to-back promotions and reached Belgium’s top tier for the first time in 2025.

An attacking full-back, the 26-year-old made 31 appearances and contributed two goals and six assists last campaign, as the La Louvière-based side renewed their place in the Belgian Pro League.

Liongola, who is of Burundian descent and has earned 15 international caps to date, is now ready for a new challenge in S6 – and he can’t wait to get started.

He said:

“I’m joining in a new era and that is something that really excites me. Sheffield Wednesday are a big club, an historic club with a lot of fans, so I'm looking forward to the future.

“We have a good chance to go and play a great season and I am a player who will always try to give everything on the pitch. For me to come to the club at this time, right at the start of the pre-season, is a perfect situation. Everything is so positive here and I’m excited to be part of it.”

Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said: “Jordi is a player we are very excited to bring to Sheffield Wednesday. He arrives with a remarkable story, having played an important role in RAAL’s rise through back-to-back promotions before helping establish the club in the top tier of Belgian football.

“His performance levels have been consistently strong in a highly competitive league, and we believe this represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a player of his quality and experience. Moving to a new country and league naturally requires an adaptation period, so patience will be important, but we are confident he has the attributes to settle quickly and succeed.”

Liongola, who began his career in the youth academies of Standard Liège and Royal Antwerp, remained in Belgium to sign his first professional contract with Challenger Pro League side Lierse Kempenzonen in 2021.

He impressed with Lierse and this prompted a move to RAAL one year later, and he went on to make 125 appearances for Les Loups, registering 12 goals and 16 assists.

Upon receiving international clearance, the defender will join his new team-mates at Middlewood Road for pre-season ahead of the Owls’ League One campaign.
