Sheffield Wednesday suffered a 3-1 defeat at Hull City, with defensive lapses proving costly in a closely contested Championship fixture.

Jamal Lowe opened the scoring for Wednesday in the 23rd minute after breaking clear when Hull’s defense faltered.

The lead was short-lived as Matt Crooks equalised for Hull just a minute later with assistance from Kyle Joseph.

The game shifted significantly when Dominic Iorfa inadvertently headed a Hull free-kick into his own net in first-half stoppage time, giving Hull the lead at the break. Kyle Joseph then secured Hull's victory with a goal in the 58th minute.

Sheffield Wednesday's manager Henrik Pedersen praised his players’ efforts, despite the result, pointing out the critical impact of Hull's second goal: “We were top in the first half - I think we competed at a very high level."

"One of the reasons (Hull) are in the top six is because they are so strong in transition and high on the press – I think we handled that in a good way.”

The own goal was a significant setback, yet Pedersen lauded his players' resolve: “To concede an own goal like that was tough for the boys. The boys kept on trying and we showed we can compete in many ways, but it also showed we have a lot more to learn.”

“It hurts, but the reaction from the boys with how we came back in the game showed me that they never give up. They put everything on the pitch what they were able to do.”
