A Sheffield convenience store faces the loss of its alcohol licence after being caught selling drink to an under-age buyer.

South Yorkshire Police have called for the licence review for Best One on 267 Southey Green Road, Southey Green.

It follows “two failed test purchase operations, repeated breaches of licence conditions and sustained failure by the premises licence holder to engage with responsible authorities despite extensive advice, support and opportunities to remedy the issues without formal review”.

A report from police said that the shop sold a vape refill illegally to someone aged under 18 who made a test purchase in May last year. A police cadet sent to make another test purchase in September was able to buy alcohol despite being under age.

Trading standards and safeguarding teams visited the shop in June to explain the seriousness of under-age sales. Advice and guidance was given to help try to ensure the shop’s future compliance with the law.

Police and trading standards also visited in September and put a voluntary action plan in place. The police report says that licence holder Harminder Bains failed to respond to their follow-up communications and failed to provide evidence that they had complied with the action plan.

The police application will be heard at a meeting of Sheffield City Council’s licensing sub-committee next Monday (March 9). It has been supported by Sheffield Children Safeguarding Partnership and Sheffield Trading Standards.

Mr Bains will have a chance to respond to the application at the meeting, to be held at Sheffield Town Hall.
