Three quarters of a million pounds is to be spent on fixing the roof of Sheffield primary school. forced to close earlier this year for safety reasons.

Surveys at the Carterknowle Junior School have found serious damage to the roof which is leaking and which has tiles falling off, forcing staff to cordon off part of the playground.

Sheffield City Council is considering allocating £720,000 of government money towards addressing the roof issues, with a meeting due to be held next week.

It would pay for a series of temporary measures, allowing children to return to class safely ahead of more permanent work pencilled in for next year.

Cllr Dawn Dale, Chair of the Education, Children and Families Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

"Ensuring that every child in Sheffield can continue their education safely and without disruption is absolutely vital, and this work represents an important step in securing that."

"Our priority is always to make sure pupils can learn, thrive, and feel supported.

"This approach reflects the values at the heart of our Belonging Framework, which is about making sure children and young people feel safe, included and able to fully participate in their education. When pupils feel they belong, they are able to reach their full potential.

"I know that many parents have understandably felt worried about the situation, and I hope today’s news offers some reassurance. Their children’s safety and education remain our top priority."
