A Rotherham man has been jailed for over five years after he was caught with a backpack full of Class A drugs earlier this year.

44 year old William Swindells was found by officers during a search at a home on Hartington Close on May 1.

Upon arrival Swindells tried to stop officers entering the kitchen, with a large quantity of crack cocaine then being found on the kitchen side, as well as in a rucksack at the address.

Swindells attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended, later admitting he was dividing the drugs up ready to be sold on the street.

He was handed a five year seven month prison term at Sheffield Crown Court.

Detective Constable Ben Partridge, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

"We take drug crime extremely seriously - we simply will not tolerate it within Rotherham and across South Yorkshire.

"Illegal drugs devastate lives and communities, which is why it is crucial that we put criminals like Swindells behind bars to ensure the public are kept safe from harm.

"For us to continue our work in tackling drug crime, we need the support of our communities. If you have any information that can assist in the work we're doing, please do report it to us.

"No matter how small the information you have is, this could be what we need to ensure another criminal like Swindells gets taken off our streets."
