Funding has been approved to help create additional classroom space at a Rotherham special school as demand for places continues to grow.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council has agreed to award £550,000 from its accessibility capital prant programme to support the installation of three modular classrooms at Kelford School.

Council documents say the investment will help increase the number of special school places in the borough, in line with its planning for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The additional modular units will provide three new classrooms at the school.

The authority said the funding forms part of its wider work to ensure there are enough specialist education places available locally.

The wider programme of works at Kelford School had already been approved by the council’s Cabinet in July 2025, alongside work linked to SEND sufficiency and provision at Aspire Pupil Referral Unit.

Officials said the grant will contribute towards the construction of the new classroom spaces.

The council said the funding had been approved under delegated powers relating to education place planning within children’s services.
