Rotherham Council have shared a statement after the death of a teenager at Rother Valley Country Park.

A 16-year-old got into difficulty in the water at the park yesterday evening.

The teenager had entered the water but hadn't been seen getting out.

We're told a body was recovered from the water in the early hours of this morning.

Andrew Bramidge, Executive Director of Regeneration and Environment at Rotherham Council, said:

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events at Rother Valley Country Park over the Bank Holiday weekend and want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the young person who has lost their life in such devastating circumstances. Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.

“We would ask that people respect the privacy of the family and avoid speculation. We are working closely with South Yorkshire Police and partner agencies who are leading the response, and we will continue to support them as needed.

“As a mark of respect, Rother Valley Country Park is closed today. We will provide an update on its reopening in due course.

“We urge everyone visiting sites with open water across the borough to follow the guidance and stay out of the water unless it is in designated, supervised areas.”

South Yorkshire Fire Service say they were involved in the operation yesterday evening- sending several fire crews out to the park.

Meanwhile local MP Jake Richards has also said his thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who lost his life.
