Permanent cycle lane and one-way system set for Sheffield road
The scheme on Northumberland Road in Broomhill aims to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians
A new one-way system and cycle lane outside the University of Sheffield is going to be made permanent.
The changes, first seen on Northumberland Road between Marlborough Road and Whitham Road back in April 2025, aimed to improve cyclist safety, slow traffic, and make pedestrian crossings better.
Christopher Thomas, a student who often cycles to The Wave building for classes, is pleased with the decision.
He said: “It's great to see a dedicated and segregated bike lane in the city. I think Sheffield struggles a lot with having cycling infrastructure that’s actually planned for cyclists and not just added on after the thought.
“It’s also nice that it’s being integrated as part of the student community. It’s right outside the gym and it’s quite a busy street where a lot of taxis drive at night so it’s good to have some added protection there for potentially vulnerable road users.”
The council has highlighted that the changes focus on promoting active travel by reshaping the space to be more welcoming for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
The scheme generated 107 grumbles from locals who had objections about traffic spillover to nearby streets and the loss of parking, the council assures these changes haven’t led to major issues or safety problems.
Next steps involve council officers now teaming up with the University of Sheffield to finalise the permanent plans.
