Calls for 'more' palliative care access across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire

Demand for end-of-life care is expected to rise by around 25% by 2048 - according to Marie Curie

A North Derbyshire woman says it's 'unfair' her mum had to 'spend her final moments in pain & distress' - before her death.

42-year-old Zoe - from Chesterfield - watched her mum die in hospital last year - over a bank holiday weekend.

That's despite her mum's wish to pass away in a hospice.

Zoe says her mum died without dignity:

"When she went back into hospital, after being home for a bit, she went to a different ward again, the main ward, where she was just properly neglected.

"It was unreal! If we hadn't been staying with her every night, I think she would have passed away.

"I don't think she would have survived because they just weren't looking after her at all. We were never offered a bed on a palliative ward. No one ever spoke to us about that even being a possibility."

It comes as a new report suggests nearly 170,000 people in England die each year without adequate palliative care.
