'Morale on the up' amongst South Yorkshire Steelworkers
That's according to Ian Kemp who works at Speciality Steel in Rotherham
South Yorkshire steelworkers tell us there's a 'renewed optimism' around the future of the industry.
The government vowed earlier this month to nationalise Speciality Steel plants - following a collapse in takeover talks.
Ian Kemp works at the Speciality Steel site in Rotherham & represents the workers there with the GMB Union:
"Since the government announcement was made morale has really increased.
"We can now see that potentially there is a future and one that is backed by the government.
"If the government wants to back your firm, then the possibilities are endless.
"Hopefully we're getting things up to scratch so that we can start producing steel sooner rather than later.
"Let's face it; nothing gets made without the steel industry.
"Whether it's your car or your washing machine - we need steel and we need steel that is made in this country.
"We can't rely on steel coming from abroad."
Speciality Steel - which has sites in Brinsworth & Stocksbridge - went into liquidation in 2025.
