A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Barnsley.

Yorkshire Ambulance service alerted Police last night (3rd September) after they were called out to a property on Wingfield Road, in Athersley South, where a man was found with multiple injuries.

South Yorkshire Police say while formal identification is yet to take place, his family has been informed and is being supported by family liaison officers.

A post-mortem examination carried out today (Friday 4th September) produced an inconclusive result and further testing is required to determine the man’s cause of death.

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood, senior investigating officer in the case, said:

"We know this will be distressing news to our local communities and our officers will remain in the Athersley South area throughout the day as our investigation continues.

"A scene is currently in place on Wingfield Road to allow officers to carry out their work, and we would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them.

"Fast work by detectives and officers has resulted in us making an arrest and we continue to have a dedicated team hard at work to understand the circumstances around this tragic incident.

"Our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones and they will remain at the centre of our thoughts throughout our ongoing investigation."
