Plans submitted to turn former Kimberworth pub into restaurant and shop
The former Green Dragon Inn could be turned into an eatery - with a One Stop style shop attached
Plans have been submitted to transform a former Kimberworth pub into a restaurant and convenience store.
The application, lodged with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, seeks permission to change the ground floor of the Green Dragon Inn on High Street from a public house to a restaurant, while keeping the flat above as a home.
Plans also include the demolition of existing outbuildings and the construction of a single-storey retail extension, described as a One Stop–style convenience shop.
According to the plans, the new shop would be attached to the side of the building, standing just over three metres high with a flat roof, providing around 3,200 square feet of retail space. The existing car park at the front of the site, with around 15 spaces, would be retained.
Application documents state that the pub has been vacant for a long period and is no longer viable, despite being marketed specifically to pub operators at what is described as a realistic rent. Planning documents argue that there has been no genuine interest from operators and that the loss of the pub would not leave the area short of community facilities, with other licensed premises available nearby.
Internally, the former pub layout would be adapted for restaurant use, including the main bar area, conservatory and function room, while the first-floor flat would remain unchanged.
The application states that the development would create new jobs, increase footfall on High Street and reduce the risk of antisocial behaviour linked to a long-vacant building. It also argues that the convenience store would benefit local residents, particularly those without access to a car.
Planning documents say the scale and design of the extension would not harm neighbouring homes and that traffic and parking levels would remain acceptable.
Residents can comment on the plans until February 26.
