More young people in South Yorkshire signing up for 'self-exclusion schemes' to stop gambling
Doncaster is the 4th highest location in the country for this according to new research by GAMSTOP
A gambling safety charity - who help people in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire - tell us 'More awareness is needed from a young age' about the dangers of gambling.
It's as GAMSTOP have seen a rise of over 30 per cent in 16-24-year-olds registering with a national online self-exclusion scheme - to prevent them from further betting.
The new research shows Doncaster to be the 4th highest location in the country right now amongst young people for these self-exclusions.
Fiona Palmer is GAMSTOP's Chief Exec:
"The younger generation - from our experience - are gambling a lot more.
"Therefore, raising awareness through education at a younger age will help to make these younger people more aware of the risks of gambling and the harm it can cause.
"Education around this topic hasn't been widely available in the past.
"It needs to be more widespread.
"Online gambling is extremely accessible and it's everywhere.
"It's normalised now as part of adult life.
"I have seen it first hand with my children as they've turned into young adults."
In total, 532,484 people have registered with GAMSTOP between its launch in April 2018 and December 31st, 2024, which equates to over 1% of the adult UK population.
