EXCLUSIVE: Sheffield dad admits 'grief doesn't fade' nearly 2 years after his son's suicide
Kevin Gascoigne has been discussing the loss of his son - Jonny - as part of World Suicide Prevention Day
A grieving South Yorkshire dad is encouraging people struggling with their mental health not to 'bottle up' their emotions.
As part of World Suicide Prevention Day - we've been speaking exclusively to Kevin Gascoigne from Sheffield.
His 35-year-old son Jonny - took his own life nearly 2 years ago.
The dad-of-2 was a well-known Sheffield United content creator for his YouTube channel - the Shoreham View - which has entertained thousands of Blades fans over the years.
However, Jonny struggled with his mental health - & ended up taking his own life in September of 2024.
An inquest last year finding there were 'missed opportunities' for authorities to step in & help Jonny.
His dad - Kevin - says the impact of Jonny's death is still felt by everybody - including his young son:
"Once his dad died, he couldn't be a goalkeeper again.
"That was something he did with his dad, which shows how it affects family.
"I can still see the hurt in my grandson's eyes today - we even had a few tears just last week.
"I'd give my right arm now for Jonny to be here.
"More or less every night I lay with my own thoughts.
"I often think what could I have done differently?
"You're never going to forget - no matter what we do - it'll always be there - because we miss him so much.
"It's hard to imagine how it got to that stage because Jonny was such a character.
"Please talk out your problems.
"Don't keep it in and bottle it up - that's the worst thing you can possibly do.
"You need to be talking to people."
On average - around 20 people in the UK tragically end up taking their own life every day.
