People in Doncaster will soon see changes to recycling collections as the local council prepares to introduce new brown bins starting in 2027.

After a shakeup in government rules, councils will need to separately collect paper and card from other recyclable materials.

Residents have been getting their annual bin collection calendars this week, detailing collection days and providing information on how to handle items like batteries and vapes.

Currently, Doncaster households organise waste using:

Blue bin for recycling

Black bin for non-recyclable waste

Green bin for garden waste

Green box for glass

With the upcoming changes, the blue bin will be used for paper and card only.

A newly introduced brown bin will accommodate other dried recyclable materials, including liquid cartons, tins, cans, foil, empty aerosols, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, and metal lids from bottles and jars.

The green box will continue to be used for glass collection, while the black bin remains for non-recyclable waste.

The collection schedule will keep running on a fortnightly basis, alternating weekly between recycling and black bins.

Deputy Mayor of Doncaster, Cllr Glyn Jones, said:

“This year’s new bin calendars contain an important message that recycling collections will change in 2027 with the introduction of an additional recycling bin."

"The new brown bins will be for metals, plastic and liquid cartons and when the new collections start the blue bin will only be used for paper and card."

“For now, residents should continue to follow their calendar and the current system, and we will communicate in plenty of time when the new changes start to take shape.

"It is important we carry on recycling as we are in the meantime and put the right things in the right bin to keep up Doncaster’s recycling rates.”

Further details about the brown bin rollout and additional information will be announced later in the year.
