Chesterfield to bid to become the UK's first 'Town of Culture'
Chesterfield’s bid will celebrate its market-town heritage, industrial past, and creative present.
Chesterfield is apply to become the first UK Town of Culture in 2028 - with their bid focusing on the town's heritage, creative talent, and arts and culture scene.
The competition, in a similar vein to City of Culture, aims to highlight towns’ cultural strengths and provide opportunities for growth and tourism.
The winning town will receive £3m to deliver six months worth of cultural events in 2028, with finalists also receiving £250,000 each to implement elements of their bids.
Chesterfield’s application will underscore its market-town heritage, industrial past, and creative present.
The bid is being worked on by the Borough Council and Chesterfield Town Board, which oversees a £20m investment in the town through the Government’s Pride in Place programme.
Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Chesterfield is a town with a proud history and a bright future. Our cultural offer is growing stronger every year, driven by the passion and creativity of our communities.
“Entering the UK Town of Culture competition is a chance to shine a national spotlight on everything that makes Chesterfield special and to build a legacy that benefits residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”
Emily Bowman from Junction Arts and Chesterfield Pride in Place Town Board added: “Chesterfield’s cultural scene is full of energy and ambition. This competition is a fantastic opportunity to bring people together, support local creativity, and showcase the town’s potential on a national stage.”
Barnsley in South Yorkshire is also planning to bid for Town of Culture.
