The clock on Barnsley Town Hall has stopped working again, weeks after undergoing major repair work.

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council said the clock, which is more than 92 years old, has recently been fully rebuilt by specialist contractors after it stopped working last year.

In a statement, the council said the repair and rebuild work was completed before Christmas, followed by an extended period of testing. The mechanism was tested for a month between January and February before being reinstalled in the clock tower.

The council added the clock appeared to be working after being put back into place, but stopped again last week, and it currently showing 12 O’Clock.

Councillor Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said some parts had to be specially made because components were no longer readily available due to the age of the clock.

The council said specialist contractors had been contacted to diagnose and repair the latest fault.

“Unfortunately it stopped again last week, and our specialist contractors have been contacted to diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible,” said Cllr Franklin.

“We know the Town Hall is a treasured landmark to local people and we thank everyone for their patience while we get this iconic clock repaired and for the long term.

No timescale has been given for when the clock will be working again.
