A new rewards app has been launched by Barnsley Council to help residents earn points and win prizes by walking, wheeling, cycling and taking public transport.
BetterPoints, a behaviour change app was launched on Monday, June 15, to encourage residents to get active this summer.
The aim of the app is to encourage people to get out and be more active for at least 10 minutes a day, and help reduce car journeys and support local businesses.
The app is funded by Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) through the Consolidated Active Travel Fund.
The app rewards people with BetterPoints, a digital currency which they can spend on high-street vouchers for brands like Costa, Greggs, Argos, and Amazon, local businesses, supermarkets, or donate to charities.
The app also has weekly, monthly, and bi-monthly prize draws to win Barnsley gift cards, which are redeemable at over 160 businesses.
The rewards programme is now live across all areas of Barnsley, with over £4,000 of prizes available.
Councillor Paul Kelly, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “We’re committed to making Barnsley a healthier and more connected place to live and that means investing in the things that help residents make positive changes in their daily lives.
“BetterPoints is a simple, free way for residents to get involved, earn rewards and feel the benefit of being more active. And because those rewards can be spent locally, it also helps support businesses right here in Barnsley.”
The council have announced that they will be marking the launch of the rewards app with two World Cup-themed scavanger hunt events, in partnership with Football Club Community Trust.
The free walks will take place on Tuesday, June 16 at 3.30pm at Locke Park, and on Tuesday, June 23 at 3.30pm at Mapplewell Park.
Both events are open to all residents to explore the park in a football-themed activity trail.
