The Chancellor has urged the Welsh Government to pass on a £100 payment aimed at helping households with energy bills.

John Healey announced the plan in his Budget on Wednesday.

He told MPs the devolved nations would receive their share of funding.

The payment would go directly into the bank accounts of households in council tax bands A to D, at a cost of £2.6 billion.

The Chancellor said it would take the pressure off households in the coldest months.

He told the Commons: "The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments will receive their share of this funding.

"I call on them to do the same, and give people of all nations in the UK breathing space on their energy bills this winter."

Millions of households in England will get a payment of 100 pounds to help them with their energy bills.

Welsh Government response to budget

Elin Jones, the Welsh Government's Cabinet Minister for Finance, described the Budget as a real-terms cut dressed up as a windfall.

She said: "The UK Government will try to present today's budget as a win for Wales. It isn't.

"Once you account for inflation, this is still a real-terms cut to our funding, not new money that improves our position.

"Today's budget hasn't shifted the dial.

"Our fiscal position is worse than it was before the Chancellor stood up, and that has direct consequences for our own Budget on 17 November.

"We will need to make tough choices, prioritise wisely, and drive further efficiency across the public sector, so that we can sustain investment in the areas that matter most to people in Wales.

"On rail, fiscal flexibilities and public services, Wales has been ignored again."

Welsh Labour response

Ken Skates, the leader of Welsh Labour, said the Budget represented a massive boost in funding for public services in Wales.

He said: "Plaid Cymru have a massive additional amount of money to improve public services in Wales and should focus on the job of delivering for people, rather than obsess over breaking up Britain.

"The Prime Minister has said he wants to deliver growth in every postcode and bring hope back to our country, and that is what Welsh Labour, working with UK Labour, will continue to do."
