More than 3000 solar panels installed on Principality Stadium roof
It's the largest solar project of its kind at any UK sports ground
The UK’s biggest solar panel project at a sports venue has been installed at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.
Over three thousand panels have been fitted to the roof, creating enough electricity to power more than fifty matchdays a year.
The solar panels, fitted by EvoEnergy, consist of 3,296 units placed on the stadium's roof
These panels will produce around 1.25 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
Decarbonisation Efforts
The panels are expected to reduce the stadium's annual carbon output by 219,791kg.
This forms part of a broader package of sustainability measures implemented at the Principality Stadium, aiming to decarbonise its operations.
Future Plans and Projects
The WRU is set to unveil its first sustainability strategy later this year.
WRU Chief Financial and Operating Officer Gavin Marshall expressed the significance of this initiative for Welsh rugby: “This marks a hugely exciting milestone, not just for Principality Stadium, but for the future of Welsh rugby.
"As one of the most iconic sporting venues in the world, it’s right that we harness its scale and influence to drive positive change."
Additional sustainability measures include a well water abstraction system, rain-water harvesting, LED lighting installation throughout the stadium, and commitments to sustainable food procurement.
Darren Crossman, WRU Head of Facilities, stated: "As custodians of this iconic stadium, we have a responsibility to lead by example, and this solar installation is a significant technical and operational step forward."
Diala Isid from EvoEnergy commented: “We’re proud to have partnered with the Welsh Rugby Union to deliver a landmark solar PV system, reflecting a shared commitment to clean energy and a more sustainable future.”
