Port Talbot fire operation 'deescalating' as crews continue to damp down after major blaze
Air quality advice is still being issued following Wednesday's commercial waste fire
Fire crews in Port Talbot continue to manage a major blaze on Dock Road as the incident begins to deescalate into a controlled phase.
Efforts are being supported by Neath Port Talbot Council JCB crews to help with damping down and managing any lingering hotspots.
Air quality monitoring has been deployed throughout the day in areas affected by the smoke plume to evaluate impacts on public health.
Authorities are still advising local residents and businesses to keep windows and doors closed while smoke is present, and open them once it dissipates.
Anyone feeling unwell should seek medical advice.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Services are collaborating with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to ensure the site remains safe and to minimise any ongoing environmental or community impact during the recovery phase.
NRW officers have been on site offering specialist advice to both fire and rescue services and the site operator.
Monitoring has confirmed that firefighting water run-off has not contaminated the nearby River Afan.
While the A4241 Afan Way dual carriageway and Afan Way/Water Street westbound have reopened, the adjacent footpath and cycleway currently remain closed.
