Man from Swansea sentenced to life in prison for brother's murder
Darren Steel found guilty of murdering his older brother Martin Steel in Clase
A 41-year-old man from Morriston has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his brother in Swansea.
Martin Steel's body was discovered at a residence on Hill View Crescent, Clase shortly after 10:30am on 20th May 2023.
Darren Steel pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and manslaughter in February 2024 but was ultimately found guilty by a jury yesterday.
Darren Steel has now been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years for the murder conviction, alongside charges of grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm from his initial trial.
Detective Inspector Stuart Prendiville reflected on the investigation, highlighting the distress caused by Steel's actions.
"This has been a long and complex investigation into an incident which has shocked the communities of Clase, Morriston and the wider community of Swansea. The impact on the family has been significant," he said.
He added that Darren Steel's decision to plead not guilty subjected the family to the pain of two separate trials.
"Darren Steel is a violent and dangerous individual and the life sentence and minimum tariff of 20 years is wholly justified in this case. We are relieved with the outcome and glad that the court proceedings have now come to an end. Our thoughts are with the family."
