A Cardiff man has been jailed for deliberately driving a car at speed into two men.

The incident happened in Cathays, Cardiff, on July 5, 2024, following an altercation in Bruce Street.

Johnathan Newbury, of Pentywn, pleaded not guilty but following a trial in March this year was convicted of possession of a blade and inflicting and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The two victims in the case happened to have booked accommodation at the same Airbnb as Newbury.

A disagreement took place which escalated to violence.

Newbury was seen getting out of a dark SUV with three other males, who were armed with a large knife and chased the victims.

He then got back in the SUV and drove at the victims, aged 17 and 18.

CCTV showed the vehicle driving on the wrong side of Crwys Road and then deliberately colliding with the victims at the junction of Malefant Street, throwing them up in the air and causing serious bodily injury to the youngest.

Newbury, 33, was sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Monday, June 16 to eight years in prison and two years on extended licence. Once released, he will be banned from driving for two years.

Detective Sergeant George Buckley said:“Newbury used extreme violence to attack the victims, and it was just fortunate that the injuries were not more serious.

“The physical and mental impact on the victims has been significant. We hope the sentencing will help the victims in their recovery.

“We would also like to acknowledge the support of the witnesses in this case as their evidence was crucial in securing justice.”
