Large fire breaks out at former school building in Merthyr Tydfil

People are being asked to keep doors and windows closed after a large fire at the site of a former school building in Merthyr Tydfil.

Flames have been seen emerging from the Ysgol-y-Graig site, in Cefn Coed.

South Wales Fire and Rescue says crew members remain at the scene. A spokesperson said:

"We are currently in attendance at a fire in the old Ysgol-y-Graig school building, in Cefn-Coed Merthyr.

"Residents are advised to close windows and doors due to smoke in the area.

"Please avoid the area to allow emergency services to deal with the incident."

Writing on Facebook, Local Councillor Lisa Mytton has indicated that the High street is fully closed as multiple agencies deal with the response.

The primary school building opened in 1908, with the school moving to a new building in 2021.
