Fire crews from across South Wales have been tackling a blaze on board a bulk carrier at Newport Docks.

The fire started at around 5.38am this morning (26 April) on board the vessel Nord Houston, which was docked at the port, and carrying approximately 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said a significant number of resources have been deployed, including five pumping appliances, two hydraulic aerial platforms, and a range of specialist units.

A drone unit is also being used to allow crews to monitor fire development and identify any hotspots.

The fire is currently contained, and the fire service confirmed there is "no immediate risk to life or to surrounding properties."

A number of other agencies including Associated British Ports, harbour authorities, Natural Resources Wales, the police and the local authority, are working alongside the fire service to ensure public safety and to monitor potential environmental impact.

Members of the public are advised to avoid the dock area where possible.
