Sussex charity warns summertime drinking habits can be triggering for addicts
A Hastings charity says it's easy to drink more than usual, which can have a huge impact on those battling alcohol addiction
Having a few beverages outside in the sun is a staple plan for most Brits, but the East Sussex Recovery Alliance says linking this time of year with having a few, can cause a relapse for those with an alcohol addiction.
Stacy, the charity's Community Engagement Officer, says just having one drink can be triggering:
"Once you’ve had that one, you feel you’ve had one you’re in control and then that could lead to another, another another it could really really spiral.
‘A lot of time people are not aware of the impact of addiction’.
"Saying to that person just have one you’ll be fine is not helpful, because that can lead to a down spiral. Encourage them to find a sober drink they would like. Ask them if they would like a mocktail or a juice."
When attending an event where alcohol is present the charity suggests those struggling with an urge to drink ‘remove themselves from the situation’.
Linking the summer with drinking can isolate people with alcohol addiction.
Stacy suggests it might be time ‘change your social circle. Engage in a new hobby or community…that support the life that you want.’
