Southampton's central police station is set for a major refurbishment, addressing persistent infrastructure issues, but the work has been delayed until 2027.

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones confirmed that plans are in place for an overhaul of Southampton Central Police Station, targeting longstanding problems with the building's heating and cooling systems, among other concerns.

The station has struggled with faults in its pipework, affecting both heating and cooling systems.

Under the new scheme, these problems will be tackled alongside broader improvements aimed at enhancing the working conditions for officers and staff.

Donna Jones stated,

“Southampton Central Police Station requires significant work to address long-standing issues with the building’s heating and cooling infrastructure. My estates team have developed a comprehensive plan that not only resolves the legacy problems in the pipework but also delivers wider improvements to the working environment for officers and staff.”

Proposals include upgrading power, heating, ventilation systems, lighting, as well as redecorating and recarpeting the station.

Custody facilities, the vehicle dock, and evidence storage areas are also planned for improvement.

Enhancements to the building's external façade are being considered.

Despite refurbishment plans, the station will remain operational throughout the construction process.

Donna Jones assured,

“The building will not be closed. Repairs will take place floor-by-floor. The station will be open and continue to run as normal.”

The refurbishment emerges as the primary approach for upgrading the ageing station, following earlier uncertainties surrounding relocation plans.

The initiative is currently in the design phase, with construction slated to start in 2027.

PCC Jones added,

“The project is now in a detailed design phase, supported by an external design team, before I appoint a main contractor. This preparation is essential to ensure value for money. Work will begin in 2027.”
