Events are taking place today and tomorrow to honour the 85th anniversary of the Portsmouth Blitz.

The night of the 10th January 1941 was the city's worst raid and claimed more than 150 lives, leaving hundreds more injured or homeless.

A commemorative service will be taking place in the Guildhall Square at the Second World War Memorial today from 10:15am until 10:45am.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “As we gather to mark the 85th anniversary of the January Blitz, we honour the strength and resilience shown by the people of Portsmouth during one of the darkest moments in our city’s history.

"These commemorations remind us of the importance of coming together to remember, reflect, and ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made.”

From July 1940 to July 1944, Portsmouth was the target of sustained bombing during the Blitz.

Significant Portsmouth landmarks, such as the Guildhall and Royal Garrison Church, were severely damaged on the night of the 10th January 1941.

The Saturday service will include readings and a two-minute silence.

There will also be a plaque unveiling dedicated to Jean Louth, who campaigned for 27 years to have the monument established to ensure names of those from Portsmouth who lost their lives during the attacks are never forgotten.

This service is open to everyone who wishes to pay their respects.

Cllr Pitt's telling us why it's so important.

He said: "This is also an opportunity to think about the impact that the civilian population had.

"You know, there were firefighters, ARP wardens, members of local Constabulary and ordinary citizens involved in quite a serious impact on the city during the Blitz 85 years ago.

"It's important that we remember they were also heroes."

There will also be a 'Weekend of Remembrance' event at the Royal Garrison Church.

Held at the Royal Garrison Church, Penny Street, the church will be open from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

A Remembrance Service will take place on Saturday at 11:45am, with further events and exhibitions taking place across the weekend.
